The weeks I couldn’t get to this and the writing I wanted to do on marketing. Since January 19 I’ve been down from a fall on the ice. A month later I’m still working on the recuperation. It goes in various, strange directions as my system gets straightened out, one way or another. It’s very distracting. Before I get out to do my normal non winter exercising I’ll be getting a physical to be sure I can do that.

I’m praying, excited, hoping for change. Each new year brings that hope, the chance for a new start. Some people really take that bull by the horns and make a totally new life for themselves. As part of my ongoing education in social media marketing, I needed to write about how to use both on-page and off-page SEO to rank for a particular keyword.

Off-page SEO is mostly backlinks or inbound links. The quality of these links determines your reputation, your knowledge, how others see you. You might call it a type of online word-of-mouth. Links should be relevant to your website. Irrelevant links bring your rank down. This isn’t the same as a link exchange. In a link exchange, you’re exchanging links. Off-page SEO is only one way. Off-page is much more important than on-page SEO, industry experts spend the majority of their time on it. The higher your Page Rank via your inbound links in Google, the higher your PR will be.

There’s programming knowledge involved in on-page so many people just ignore it to focus on off-page which is easier. You need to know on-page for Google to find and rank you. On page is what you’re known for.

There are several ways for building backlinks. There’s voluntary and natural. Voluntary is controlled by the webmaster using such things as social bookmarking, forum posting and blog comments. Natural involves the audience interested in sharing your content.

On-page is optimizing your webpage’s content for the search engines. Among the things a search engine will look for is keyword density. How many times is a certain keyword used? The more you can focus content on your website to what it’s about in context, the better. A term called “keyword stuffing” or using the word or phrase too many times will hurt you. Don’t have links or too much text not devoted to your subject matter. Your web address or url is involved in this too. The more focused it is on what your site is about, the better.

I started up those RSS feeds one day
when a Social Media Manager named Monique Neeley suggested that I
look for jobs in that field by visiting a certain website that since
may not have a feed going to it – or at least the second time I
went back to it, it wasn’t there. I looked at the words in the url
that I’ve since modified and used for different feeds –

social media projects freelance job prompt.
I started substituting
different jobs in there and just throwing that into the search bar.
The results were more jobs than I could handle! I’ve got a feed like
that going for data entry, a general freelance one, social media and
virtual assistant. I use Google Reader but you can put in a search
for RSS feed readers and come up with all kinds. I don’t know if
there’s a limit on feeds, probably depends on how much you can read!
I’ve only got a handful, just five feeds. You can also just mark
that feed read for that day if you don’t have time to go through all
of it.

In my second inbox, I have listings
from Simply Hired and Indeed. These are marked as just telecommuting
and social media. I’ve also got voice over listings since the few
voice over websites I’ve found charge to apply. I don’t mind paying
as long as I a) have the money to begin with and b) I can see a quick
ROI or Return On Investment.

How I get my listings

To start off a search I’d do something
pretty generic, just type in “telecommuting is ok” in quotes.
This tells the engine to look for that set of words. This is most
likely to bring up Craigslist ads and hopefully something like
Indeed, Simply Hired and maybe one or two other sites that might hold
a large percentage of work at home jobs. I’ve been on an alert from
the first two for some time and more recently I’ve discovered RSS
feeds, meaning Real Simple Syndication. I have those going to Google
Reader. If you want to get more specific in your search, do
“telecommuting is ok” administrative assistant or whatever field
you’re looking for. Admin asst listings are very likely to have
scams though so those you’ll need to go over those pretty carefully.
A relatively trustworthy admin asst ad will have some “meat” to
it, or should go into some kind of detail, just as an admin asst ad
for an outside the home job would.

I don’t put a lot of stock in a search
for data entry work although on occasion a decent one does show up.
These listings are famous for scams. I think the only place I’m
likely to find regular, legitimate data entry listings are Odesk.
The pay is likely to be very low there though and many people will be
applying. Even on Odesk, data entry is highly competitive.

I had Google search alerts for some
time now but they appear to have stopped so I’ve shut them off. My
RSS feeds, Indeed and Simply Hired alerts are taking up the slack.
Regardless, I should probably include the way to set Google alerts
up. Go go www.google.com
look for “news”in the upper left. Mouse over “more” at the
top, at the drop down menu click “even more”. Click on “alert”.
It’ll be the first item in that list. You’ll get “create a Google
alert”. You’ll want a comprehensive list to pull up everything.
I’ve had alerts for many things including looking for other people.

The personal assistant is very likely
to turn up dating searches. I like doing research and I’m training
in social media. The “transcription -medical” needs a little
explanation. If you want to find general transcription results, you need to tell the search engine. The minus before medical tells the engine you
don’t want medical transcription results.

Change is coming

…and change is good. Nothing can
stay stagnant for long and if it does, it dies. And with the
exception of maybe twice a month job postings, this blog may very
well have become stagnant!

I’ve had a passion for technology and
helping people/customer service for a long time. My fascination with
social media thankfully has a concrete direction to go in now that
I’m working on a certificate. My website is probably going to be
rewritten shortly. I’ve stood on years of experience in all types of
phone marketing because that’s what I do, I can do it in my sleep
(and sometimes I have!). And even though phone contact is still
probably the best way hands down to reach people, the stigma, laws
and our love of our electronic toys is pushing marketing online more
everyday.

I may be cutting back on the job
listings here and instead teaching others how to start their own
listings. There are targeted searches to have tons of great work at
home jobs streaming into your inbox, enough so you’ll have more than
you can deal with!

Among the emails I get is a daily list
from the Rat Race Rebellion. These people are among the leaders in
the home based or work at home job field. Get on their email list
and stay there. Even when I’m not looking for work I might glance
through, see if there’s something either I like the looks of or
somebody else might.

I have a daily email from Monster as
well, they’ve been a part of my listings. Literally the only search
criteria I put in is “telecommute”. Both Career Builder and
Monster have their share of scams. I think I had a telecommute
search going from Career Builder and kept pulling up garbage so I
stopped it. Not all the jobs that pulls up are going to be
telecommute. The search pulls up the word, even if the job expressly
says, “NO telecommute available”. A quick way to search for how
the word telecommute is used is to go up to edit on your toolbar and
click on “find”. As far as scams go in this, just like when
you’re looking for a job outside the home, it bothers me if a company
is listed too often. All kinds of data collection is going on behind
this – or they can’t keep people. Either is bad.

Another way to spot possible data
collection is a poorly written ad. If it’s all in one block
paragraph, I leave it alone.

It’s also a challenge when you have
several web alerts going to determine what is a duplicate and what
isn’t. It’s not uncommon I’ll put in a disclaimer: I don’t think
I’ve posted this before…

If a listing doesn’t look right to me,
I usually don’t list it. I’ve seen legitimate jobs on spammy looking
sites so it’s a judgment call.

I’m including a search of freelancing
jobs as well since by definition you’re mobile or not on site. Since
I typically have an overload of job listings without including
freelance though, I’ll probably discontinue the feed for myself and
